THE STORYTELLERS

Interviewer's Personal Note

Koks at Concord

Left to right, Martin Cox (Märt Koks), George's daughter Maimu, George's wife Elfride and George Cox himself.

Apart from Sydney’s St John Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation being situated in Waratah Street since 1963, Olev - of Estonian ancestry - claimed to have no connection with North Strathfield or Concord whatsoever.

Yet, after unequivocally expressing this fact, a dissenting voice must have surfaced in his subconscious because he suddenly recalled an old photo he’d once scanned of his two great uncles standing on a suburban footpath.

Indeed, upon digging up the photo, it turns out that on the awning behind them we can see the words "The CONCORD FLORIST"!

Kate promptly conducted some research and discovered that one of his great uncles – George – lived at 71 Major’s Bay Road Concord, during the 1930’s/40’s.

Family records reveal that George’s brother, Martin, having earned a Cross of Liberty for personal courage fighting both Germany and Bolshevik Russia in Estonia’s war of independence in 1918, decided to sell up his consequently awarded land grant allotment and leave the home country for good (in 1926). It seems that the audacious, often dangerous, political faction fighting that followed independence caused him to effect a significant relocation: to a life of farming in Tamworth New South Wales, no less!

Soon thereafter, George and family arrived in Concord ...

BACKGROUND

In response to community consultation, a number of local residents were interviewed and recorded. The sessions took place in December 2012 and February 2013 at Concord Library.

A short excerpt from each resident appears on this website. Together, they form a cross-section of insights into the wonderful community that is of and around the North Strathfield area.

The full interviews will be archived and available for borrowing at the City of Canada Bay Council Library Services.
